Project 1 | Influential Historical Figure in Recreation Paper – Edward Abbey
https://youtu.be/P8l36rtZK7M
INSTRUCTIONS:
A major component to your course is to highlight and describe in detail an assigned person whom made a major impact in the field. Every one of the above people had, or continue to have, and major role in creating community recreation programs or constructs. You are being asked to tell the story of your assigned person through a descriptive essay and share their significant influence, complete with selected images.
The minimum requirements is 800 words (2 pages –or- 5 paragraphs). Maximum 1200 (4 – 5 pages – or 8-10 paragraphs).
Follow APA 6th ed. guidelines, double spaced, 12 pt new time Roman’s font.
You are required to discuss:
· Title: Include and create a catchy title, NOT just their name, but their name and something unique to them. – Something that introduces a story or controversy concerning the person you are assigned.
· Introduction: Open up your essay to the who, what, when, where and why of the person – the impact, the history, the life, etc. or a controversy which happened that made headlines and made this person important.
· Major or significant element: WHY are we talking about this person in this course? What major element do they have that connects them to recreation, leisure, or outdoor education.
· The images: What can you share with the readers that will make a visual impact? The images (select 4-6 images and disperse them throughout your essay like the example shows – make sure they relate).
· Closing – wrap up your essay with a good summary and conclusion.
FIRST: Research SEVERAL areas regarding your topic from several resources -take notes.
SECOND: Develop an outline that includes where you want to take the reader.
THIRD: Write in a descriptive manner, and then proofread or have a class peer read over and share ideas for growth and betterment. Your paper wants to:
1) Introduce the audience to the topic .
2) Indicate the significance of the topic through illustrating what the topic was involved with or who.
3) Introduce others who were inspired or mentored by your topic and what they were led to accomplish through knowing or associating with your topic
4) List and detail major or significant accomplishments or achievements which made an impact in the realm of parks, recreation, or the leisure field.
5) Conclude the presentation with a lasting impression of who your topic was and why we are speaking about he/she in this course.
MAJOR AREAS TO CONCENTRATE ON:
1) cited or referenced work. Make sure you do so correctly. Please review the OWL at Purdue APA guidelines for proper citation and referencing work. If you’re not citing and referencing ANY material (3 -6 articles minimum) then you are plagiarizing and will receive a zero on the project. Wikipedia IS NOT a reference. Any use of Wikipedia will result in a zero.
2) Overuse of citations or references – you should normally only cite an authors’ work no more than 2 times in a paragraph, otherwise you will need to summarize and synthesize that author, because it will appear that all you are doing is re-writing their work, and not processing the information.
3) IMAGES. The example and the instructions and my lecture explicitly stated the need to highlight and illustrate images with reference to and citations on said images. Images must be relevant, high quality, and help “tell” the story. No images will yield a failing grade. And images must be kept neat, tidy, within text, and have captions labeling them from reference, i.e. (Image 1: The Leaning Tower of Pisa at dusk) or (Table 1: A Comparison and Contrast of Major Sporting Events during COVID-19 Seasons Cut Short).
4) Connection based on your insight and perspectives and real explicit contribution to recreation and leisure studies. This is YOUR perspective from YOUR research – most of this will NOT be cited or referenced, unless it pertains to aligning with another thought.
5) No real conclusion. Make a point and end it….

What is a descriptive essay?
The descriptive essay is a genre of essay that asks the student to describe something—object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. This genre encourages the student’s ability to create a written account of a particular experience through knowledge or research – immersion in the topic. What is more, this genre allows for a great deal of artistic freedom (the goal of which is to paint an image that is vivid in the mind of the reader).
