Your first case study paper comes from a set of primary sources entitled “First Impressions” assembled by the National Humanities Center. The case study begins with a secondary source introduction and then links to three narratives of early explorers and a set of early maps. Your task is to learn about what Europeans’ PERCEPTIONS were of the New World and Native Americans.

It is your responsibility to review the case study and complete a short 2-3 page paper discussing how Europeans PERCEIVED the New World and Native Americans.
The following questions can help to guide you in writing the paper:
1. Overall, what are the Europeans’ first impressions of the new lands and their inhabitants?
2. What do they find important to relate in their reports?
To Submit your Paper: Include your name on the first page of your paper. Save your assignment locally (on your hard drive or onto a flash/usb drive).
I will accept ONLY the following file types (in this order of preference):
Microsoft Word – or x
Rich Text Format – .rtf
Portable Document Format –
If you use a different wordprocessing program use the “Export as” or “Save as” features of your program to create a version in one of the above mentioned file formats.
I have also provided a guide to writing these case study papers. Make sure you review it before writing the case study. It will aid you in constructing a stronger paper and provides criteria for assessing your paper. I have also provided a writing tips worksheet with some common grammatical errors that students make writing these papers.
Check the Dropbox again in a few days for feedback on each assignment; I will grade the papers within one week of the due date.
The grading criteria for the papers is:
Clear argument and introduction (2 points)
Clear organizational structure including strong, well organized paragraphs supporting
the central argument (2 points)
Good use of the primary sources, appropriately quoted and cited, to support the
argument
(3 points)
Well written, including grammar, style, spelling, and punctuation (3 points)
