Note: Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.
In this assessment, you will assume the role of a mid-level manager. You have been asked to analyze the health information technology (IT) needs for the Independence Medical Center (IMC), a rural referral hospital located in Waterloo, IA.
Complete the Vila Health: Health Information Technology Needs Analysis interactive simulation, linked in the Resources. Gather information about the IT needs of various departments within the hospital that will support a needs assessment.
Identify the IT needs of the various hospital departments, using the IT Needs Matrix, linked in the Resources. Then, analyze the information you have collected and summarize your findings.
Note: Remember that you can submit all—or a portion of—your draft needs matrix and analysis to Smarthinking for feedback, before you submit the final version for this assessment. If you plan on using this free service, be mindful of the turnaround time of 24–48 hours for receiving feedback.
It is not necessary to cite the Vila Health media simulation as the source of your information. However, if you reference other source materials, be sure to cite them correctly, using APA style.
Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your needs matrix addresses each point, at a minimum. You may also want to read the Health Information Technology Needs Analysis Scoring Guide to better understand how each criterion will be assessed.
Choose a typical system in a setting you are familiar with.
Consider the clinical and administrative aspects of the system.
What evidence do you have that supports your description?
Describe two or three challenges.
Consider ways to ensure that systems are able to communicate with other needed systems, such as national databases and information-sharing programs.
What evidence do you have to support your assertions and conclusions?
Consider the impact of this information on strategic decisions about health information systems.
Base your assessment on your analysis of specific departmental IT needs.
Analyze system functionality, commonalities, and differences.
Consider how different end users look at the system.
What are the implications of your analysis and possible next steps for the organization?
Extrapolate from what you already know about current system functionality and how well departmental needs are presently being met.
What evidence do you have that can support this forecast?
Express your main points and conclusions coherently.
Proofread your writing to minimize errors that could distract readers and make it more difficult for them to focus on the substance of your analysis.
The following resources are required to complete the assessment.
This multimedia simulation will enable you to gather the information you will need for your needs analysis.

Summary of Findings
[Write 3–4-paragraph summary of your findings related to system functionality, commonalities, and differences.]
There are six key parts of a solid Health Information Management System. They incorporate; health data system assets, markers, data sources, data management, data items and in conclusion, dispersal and utilization of the data. These six parts can be extensively classified into three general classifications specifically; inputs, outputs and processes. These key components needs to be addressed in order to come up with a successful implementation of IT needs.
The overall IT both clinical and administrative needs are met by the establishment of a strong EHR system to manage admissions and intake, by installing computers used for communication inside the hospital. They are met by the establishment of proper nursing care plans monitored by different gadgets in the medical center. The hospital also has a comprehensive plan whereby they are sending the images digitally to Cedar Valley Radiology for consultation. The needs are also met by the establishment of an online billing payment system to cater to the patients’ needs. This criteria is advanced compared to the manual systems of entry used by the facility prior to the implementation.
The medical center has also established a basic metabolic panel to address the clinical needs, however, there is a problem in the implementation of these IT needs because most employees are semi-skilled when it comes to uses of IT in the various departments. Sending images for analysis in a different facility also increases the amount of delay in performing other related functions.
The medical center has ensured some of the needs are also addressed by setting aside a special IT team to maintain all the systems in the hospital. Setting up a proper diagnostic x-ray machine used for screening in the hospital also addresses all the therapeutic needs of the hospital. There are HIPPAA regulations in place followed by all staff members this ensures that the staff members are equipped with the ethics when handling the equipment. A special team of specialists sets aside to handle the IT needs incase they arise and there is a proper pre and post-operation services.
In a future implementation plan, data management needs to take on a center stage. This is because it aims at the collection, compiling, analysis, processing an storage of data. It also allows easy access to relevant information to those who need it while maintaining the privacy, confidentiality and integrity of the stored information. There are two types of data management in health information system; minimum data-set and integrated data repository. A minimum data-set simplifies data collection and improves the quality of data collected. An integrated data repository on the other hand combines data from various sources and helps in the collection, management and distribution of the data..

I am stil not seeing clarity and specifics. While added terminology of IT you are not showing you researched
specific current health IT needs. You need to look into health IT organizations such as AHIMA or HIMSS. Each
section of the matrix is too general. You need to be very specific about each function for each department. Are
you following and reading the Vila Health scenario?
You need to take some time to review the current trends in health IT
Look at resources such as healhIT.gov, the ONC, AHIMA, HIMSS along with peer reviwed journals.
