The Strategic Planning Process

There is an influenza shortage at the local hospital.  Planning is the most important managerial function.  Using

this document

as a guide, write a protocol to address treatment of the influenza outbreak. Use these questions to help guide your writing.

• What would you do to prepare for a vaccine shortage? 
• How would you forecast the vaccine needs for the local community? 
• What would you do to monitor your effectiveness of the plan and goals for the next influenza season? 
• What other details would you include as the supervisor?

Include material from our readings and utilize the university library to research at least 4 current scholarly, peer-reviewed references published within the past 5 years.  Cite all references (in the Glossary portion of the protocol) and utilize APA format.

Welcome to Week 3 – We will be covering Planning.

We will be covering and discussing the following chapters for the week.

Chapter 7 –Managerial Planning.

 The chapter discusses the importance of planning.  As a manager planning is one of the most important functions that you will do.  Duties of a manager include forecasting trends for the future, benchmarking by establishing goals and comparing performance.  Another important topic covered in this chapter is the strategic planning process.  This may include input from a manager but, typically it involves upper management.  Strategic planning includes planning for the future with long-range goals.  I know in my leadership position I would work with my management team on establishing goals to meet the needs of our patients and also making sure that staff where productive and using their time wisely.  Effective productivity adds to the revenue stream for success and survival in the healthcare field. 

Next, spend some time looking over the need and importance of mission, vision and values.

Chapter 8 –Tactical Considerations in Planning.  The chapter discusses the importance of the supervisor using the resources available.  Ultimately, the supervisor needs to aware and monitoring the outcome of the plans.  As a leader the decisions and actions you take need to be looked at closely.  You do your best to avoid negative outcomes.

Chapter 9 –Planning Tools.  After reviewing the chapter I came back to the first page where there is a quote “Almost all quality improvement comes via simplification of design, manufacturing, layout, processes, and procedures” by Tom Peters.  In my experience the importance of developing policies and procedures that can be universally utilized make the worksite a happier and safer environment.  My experience with quality improvement we used the Plan, Do, Check, Act model which is referred to the Deming Wheel or Cycle.  Take some time to google it.  A very helpful tool to use in your future experiences.

Lastly Chapter 10 –Time Management Techniques.  I believe that time management is one of the most essential skills that a supervisor needs to have, then that skill needs to be imparted on others.  No one likes to waste time.  The phrase that comes to mind for me is that time is money.  I just did a check on how much time employees waste at work on their smartphone.  Do you have a guess?  It is close to 2 hours a day.  Something to know that you will need to monitor as a supervisor.
