Case Management for Persons in Need

Professor Smith

June 3, 2018

ASSIGNMENT 1

According to Woodside, and McClam, (2016), generalist case management model is vital for assisting the clients to recognize their personal needs and their broker resources. Next, Clinical case management, clinical approach is essential in the instance of rehabilitation as it combines the psychotherapy and training on some related skills (Funder et al., 2016).

Strength and weaknesses of generalist model

The generalist approach is very useful in helping people that are prone to abusing substances and rehabilitation, as it helps individuals to adopt better behaviors. Next, the strategy is practical for helping a large number of cases as it has limited follow-up time. There is no ongoing monitoring, which is provided or is instead very brief. Secondly, the approach limits the planning time for case managers before initial contact with the client (Woodside, and McClam, 2016).

Strengths and weakness of clinical case approach

It recognizes the special needs of individuals that are prone to substance abuse. Secondly, the procedure entails therapeutic relations with the clients as a way of redressing the client’s special needs. Inadequate access to resources which are crucial for supporting the services of case management. Secondly, it becomes difficult in retaining qualified staffs of case management due to high low compensation and the high level of demand (Funder et al., 2016).

Application

Generalist approach is helpful in Jason case as it helps John to recognize that the drug abuse is responsible for his disorientation and results in the schizophrenic attack, Jason will understand and try improving from drug abuse. The clinical approach will apply therapy activities to help Jason overcome the drug abuse, and specialized case manager’s staffs will offer training. In Charlene case, the clinical approach will employ therapeutic techniques which will help Charlene to overcome as she will be trained on the best way of tackling the father’s aggressiveness effectively. Assignment 3

Interviewing is a fundamental skill in the field of human services. Human services professionals have to make daily choices on the specific interviewing strategies
to use. This helps them to best meet the needs of a wide diversity of clients. This paper examines the purpose of knowing and using different styles of an interview. The paper also explores the kinds of specific behaviors a professional would engage in while conducting interviews.

A human services professional helps clients by providing the required daily support. Effective interviewing skills enable human services professionals to communicate with clients and quickly ascertain the problems they face. Human services professionals usually spend a lot of time interviewing clients and trying to assist them. A human services professional can either chose to use either structured interviews or unstructured interviews. This depends on the situation of the client being interviewed
.

Structured interviews involve reading the questions exactly as they appear in the interview guide. The type of questions asked in a structured interview is often fixed (close-ended) in advance, though open-ended questions can also be included. A structured interview also standardizes the order in which questions are asked by the human services professional. The questions asked are always answered within the same context. The purpose of the structured interviews is to ensure that each interview is presented with exactly the same questions in the same order. This will ensure that answers can be reliably aggregated hence the counselor
can be able to easily find out the solution to the problem facing the client.

Unstructured interviews help the human services professional to understand the behavior of individuals (Doody & Noonan, 2013). The questions asked to occur in a natural course of an interaction between the human services professional and the client. The human services professional follow the narrations of a respondent then comes up with questions from them, although the professional may have a list of questions as a guideline. Unstructured interviews are undertaken for the purpose of collecting data about the cognitive processes and experiences of a client (Jones, 2010). The questions asked by the human services professional are largely unscripted. The human services professional aims at collecting data that may help him/her to effectively address the needs of the client.

The human services professional should have a well-developed understanding of an issue facing the client (Bui et al., 2015). This will allow him/her to come up with a highly structured interview guide that will provide a client with meaningful, appropriate and relevant response categories to choose from for each question. Structured interviews are, therefore, appropriate to be used when there is an adequate understanding of a problem facing the client (Tolin et
al., 2018).

Unstructured interviews might be used there is a need to allow clients to give their own answers. It is also suitable when there is a need to modify questions depending on the answers given by the clients. Questions can also be added or eliminated in the course of the interview. Unstructured interviews might also be used when there is a need to allow clients to answer questions asked in some profundity with their own choice of words. This can in turn aid the professional to have an insight on how the client understands the issues facing him
/her. Unstructured interviews might also be suitable when there is a need to create qualitative data. Finally, I can use the unstructured interview when I want to inquire more about the issues facing the client. This will give me an opportunity to get an in-depth understanding and clarification.

It is important for a human service professional to analyze first the problem presented
by the client. This will enable him to understand the problem and also examine the extent of the problem. This is also significant in determining the appropriate interviewing technique to be adopted by the professionals. Human services professionals should always strive to use the types of interviews that are appropriate for the client. This will enable human services professionals to come up with the best recommendations for solving the problem facing a client.

Good details! Helpful introductory information provided for the reader.

Good insight!

Sometimes we will have to use structured interviews, as they may be required for funding sources, regulatory requirements and accreditation requirements. In these cases, there also may be a time frame regarding when a completed structured interview would need to be documented.

Great critical thinking supported by references.

I agree with your comments! The use of an unstructured interview will allow the use of open-ended questions. These questions can generate answers which provide additional information regarding the client’s feelings and thoughts.

Great planning!

Well-researched!

Case Management

Cate is a 19-year-old girl, who lives with his mother, Taylor, and step-father, David in Detroit. Cate’s mother, Taylor works three jobs to be able to pay all the bills including her daughter’s school fees. Her husband, David is a jobless drunkard who is often violent and rude. He has been sexually assaulting Cate. Due to the absence of her mother, Cate could not get to her concerning the issue and thus she found comfort in drugs. As a result, Cate’s performance deteriorated and pushed her peers away by being a loner. Some of the challenges Cate suffers on a daily basis include parent (mother) absenteeism, lack of basic needs due to the limited resources, as well as psychological trauma (Penzenstadler, Machado, Thorens, Zullino, & Khazaal, 2017).

The case Management;

Goals

Outcome

Cate has two major problems. One is the fact that her stepfather is taking advantage of her sexually and the second problem is her constant use of illegal substances.

To aid her to heal, some treatment strategies could be implemented. Such include basic education on the dangers of substance abuse. Counseling could also assist in this matter as well as sexual harassment by her stepfather. Encouraging cate to participate in extra-curricular activities could help keep her mind engaged thus no thoughts of using drugs.

Attending seminars in relation to sexual harassment and joining support groups could also be of help (Joo, & Huber, 2015).

-Establish a stronger relationship with her mother and opening up to her in relation to being sexually harassed by her stepfather.

-Improve her academic performance.

-Get to forgive her stepfather.

-Engage in physical activities and interact more with peers.

Upon the achievement of these goals, Cate will find peace with herself as well as persons around her. She will be able to interact with her peers and also improve her academic performance.

Clients’ name: Taylor

Age: 39-years-old

Gender: Female

Taylor is a busy woman who hardly has time to spend with her daughter. The key problem is her absenteeism in her daughter’s life.

A strategy that could be implemented is the formulation of activities that Taylor could use to spend more time with Cate such as swimming. This way, Taylor will be able to get to know Cate a little bit more.

-Improve her relationship with her daughter.

-Creating time to interact with Cate

-Being Cate’s confidant.

Outcome

Clients’ name: David

Age: 38-years-old

Gender: Male

David is a drunkard who sexually assaults his step-daughter.

David requires rehabilitation for the over-use of alcohol.

Legal action ought to be taken for sexually harassing Cate (Penzenstadler et al., 2017).

David could also join forums that will educate him on matters relating to businesses and gaining self-employment.

-Quit abusing alcohol.

-Face the legal punishment allocated to him.

-Seek forgiveness from both Cate and Taylor.

-Find a job or start up a business.

After achieving these goals, David would be able to find a job and repair his relationship with his stepdaughter.

The case management plan, generally describes how the issue at hand should be handled to achieve the optimum best results. Joining support groups, such as Alcohol Anonymous for David, will aid in accomplishing the set goals for all the clients. Also, social relations and interaction will be of help to the clients, through which Cate will be able to interact with her peers as well as her mother, David will openly speak of his alcohol addiction and gain support from both friends and family. Maintaining a commitment towards the set goals will generally improve the quality of life of the clients (Joo, & Huber, 2015).

Human Services Philosophy Statement

Human Services Philosophy Statement

Introduction

The same way engineers and architects rely heavily on blue prints in order to understand the nature of their work and communicate to other people effectively what they are capable of, is the same way human services professional depend on the philosophy statements to communicate their professionalism in their line of work. One segment of this philosophy statement is the portfolio which tells a lot about a student or any professional for it can be used to quickly assess a person’s expertise, values, experiences and even some social, cultural and ethics of a person. Therefore, a portfolio forms a very crucial part of the philosophy statements which dictates any informs a lot about any professional in the human services sector.

Many scholars in the recent? have all agreed that the best way to do a quick assessment on both students and even those who are already in the field of human services is by understanding their
educational, professional and ethical values of a person summarized by one’s portfolio (Gray, Dean, Agllias, Howard, & Schubert, 2015). Therefore, when developing a portfolio one should tackle the three key components which are the purpose the portfolio is intended to serve, the definition of what expertise the person may have accrued over their educational period and finally the pragmatics which is very important and the language one uses in delivering their information matters a lot. It promotes the development of skills and knowledge that might be the very key in the implementation of individual
compiling the portfolio.

Human services in the recent past have been given little recognition globally but the role the sector plays in human is very pivotal. Since so many praises can be given to engineers, lawyers or even doctor but the human service industry will forever remain the backbone of humanity for without it there can never be other fields of study which rely on humanity as they serve the human needs. But ideally of what purpose could science serve if there is humanity to appreciate the beauty of science? It therefore means that human service is very fundamental field in any human race.

This field requires support from every relevant stakeholder in order to make its contribution recognizable globally. For instance, the case of flooding and civil war, the major sector which has been in the fore front to restore the sanctity of humanity is the human service industry (Neukrug, 2016). Some of the individuals in this sector have philosophy statements which are very comprehensive and informing. Hence in philosophy statement development one should clearly understand the purpose his or her portfolio for it determines and tell
more about who one is.

In summary, it can be said that human service is a very important aspect of humanity and a professional field which should be given the right attention it deserves just like other sectors of service industry. Also, portfolios are equally important in allowing professional and students alike to summarize what they could have learnt in their respective field of choice. This kind of information helps assessors to create linkage between the student or a professional and their portfolios.
