Good response to the discussion post that would have benefited from a little more detail. Try to back up your points by drawing specific examples from the film (for example, if you think something is charming, say how). Your answer also does not directly contrast Méliès’s film with the last event/blockbuster movie you saw, so just make sure you fully address the set question. This said, I really like your writing style, LaShunda, just be careful of spelling/grammar errors.

Solid answers if perhaps lacking in detail and specificity. Although you do bring in examples of storytelling/narrative/plot devices and editing choices in relation to contemporary cinema at the end, I think you could have done more to incorporate this into your whole argument. Also remember to give evidence to back up your claims. For example, don’t just say “the plot point is often used in movies”, tell us what movies, how this is achieved and what effect it has. Don’t just say, “Various camera movements and shootings on location are also used”, tell us what these camera movements are. Adding that bit more detail will really help flesh out the ideas in your answers and demonstrate your overall knowledge.

I particularly liked your comparison of Chaplin to modern comedians such as Kevin Hart and George Carlin in one of your responses. In your answer, maybe you could have backed up some of your points with a little more detail/explanation. For instance, I was intrigued by your statement that “Gold Rush made its viewers participants”, but I would have liked you to have fleshed this out with a few examples of how/where the film achieved this. One or two grammatical errors here, but on the whole I really like your writing style and your engagement with the materials and your peers.

This had the makings of an excellent discussion forum post, but it is crying out for more detail. Mission Impossible II was such a great choice, and you were able to draw upon the film’s use of iconography to convincingly position it as a science fiction film. I also liked your discussion of soundtrack vs a film score. I was, however, a little unsure what you meant when you referred to the combination of science fiction and action in Week Three’s content. Where exactly did you see this, and which films exemplified this mix of genres? A little more detail would have helped convey your answer more fully. Finally, your discussion of sound needed to be a lot fuller. You needed to say why sound stood out in these scenes and perhaps use this as an opportunity to further showcase your knowledge of this week’s course content.

You answer covers all of the points of the question and convincingly argues that Mission Impossible II would not have been allowed under the Hays Code. There are one or two statements here that perhaps require additional clarification. For example, you say the Code prohibited the use of drugs and alcohol “unless in few conditions”. What were those conditions and did they apply to MI:2? Try to fully explore and give evidence for such statements. Finally, there are some grammatical errors here so just watch out for that.
