Major: Social Worker

Topic: Foster Care System

GP: To inform

SP: To inform the audience about two major problems of Foster Care System and some sustainable initiatives to improve and meet the needs of children in foster care system.

Design: Cause/ Solution

Introduction:

Attention Getting Material: Denise Goodman, a child welfare professional and consultant with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, says there needs to be an “all hands-on deck” mentality to support foster families, especially since not every family can be a foster family.

Audience Connection: Where am I going to live? This should be the concern of a child who has been separated from his family environment? Well, Tracey Feild, director of the Child Welfare Strategy Group at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, tells: We believe all kids who have to be removed from their families should be placed with other families,That’s the most important criterion for placement — or it should be.”

Connect to Earth Charter/Major: Section 4, Number 14, letter a of the Earth Charter state “Provide all, especially children and youth, with educational opportunities that empower them to contribute actively to sustainable development.” As a future Social Worker

Topic: Voting
GP: To inform
SP: To inform the audience about the history and constitutionality of voting in the United States.
Design: Chronological/Topical

Introduction:

Attention Getter: Ladies and gentlemen repeat after me: “We the People of the United States in
order to form a more perfect union establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the
common defense, promote the general welfare to ourselves and our posterity.” In the very
beginnings of our country, “the People” referred to white, landowning men. Now, this right has
extended in respect to a broadening electorate. For the first time in history, we are finally “the
People”.

Connect the Topic to Audience: For those of us who vote, we share the social responsibility of
making our voice heard. As college students, and the future of our country, our vote in the
upcoming election will set the tone of our political system for years to come.

Connect to Self and Earth Charter: Section 4, Number 13, Letter ‘B’ of the Earth Charter
states, “Support local, regional and global civil society, and promote the meaningful participation
of all interested individuals and organizations in decision making.” As regular citizens, it can be
argued that the most vital participatory means of decision making is (someone say voting).

Preview: Today I will be providing some critical information that will hopefully educate you on
both the electoral process and the importance of embedding yourself within this process.

Transition: The ballots have opened; step right this way and allow me to lead you towards Main
Point One.

I. Voter I.D. Laws can be traced back to the very roots of our country’s birth. Let’s delve
into some of this deeply imbedded history to further our understanding.

A. The document Federalist 68 outlined the Founding Father’s reasons for not
making voting as easily accessible as they could have.

1. Currently, voting eligibility is granted to citizens over the age of 18, and in
nearly all states they must also be non-felons.

a. However, voting in the United States was originally much less
inclusive.

b. I learned that the majority of our Founding Fathers vehemently
disagreed with the idea of a representative electorate.

2. There was a popular vote made by those permitted to vote (white property-
owning men), the ultimate decision was made by “a small number of
persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be
most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such
complicated investigations,” referencing the addition of the Electoral
College (someone say Electoral College).

B. There are two main reasons why our Founders believed the general public was not
fit to make the important decision of electing a president.

a. Due to a lack of internet or television, it was nearly impossible for
lower-class citizens to become educated enough to understand a
candidate’s position in order to form a reasonable decision.

b. During the Constitutional Convention, it was decided that an
Electoral College would satisfy smaller states. Under this system.
Each state had the same number of Electoral Votes as they had
representatives in Congress. In other words, no state could have
less than three, meaning that those residing in smaller states would
have their votes count more than those living in medium or large
states.

c. This system is still in place today. However, as voters become
more informed and news becomes more accessible, this system is
proving to be more and more unnecessary.

C. Throughout our country’s development, there have been significant changes in
our electorate.

1. According to David Wolfford, a government and politics scholar and
published author, the most common form of political participation is
voting.

a. He broadens this claim by noting how in November 2016, about
138 million people, just over 60% of America’s voting-eligible
population, cast their vote.

b. This is contrasted by the 43,782 votes in what is considered to be
America’s first real general election in 1789.

2. The inclusion of Amendments 15, 19, 23, 24, and 26 within the
Constitution have helped expand the suffrage of citizens, ensuring a
wider variety of voices coming together during election times to make
decisions for significant changes of our government. They have allowed
voting rights (someone say voting rights) for African American Males,
and have made voting for women, citizens above the age of eighteen, and
citizens residing in Washington D.C. constitutional (someone say
constitutional).

3. Additionally, with the elimination of literary tests, poll taxes, the
grandfather clause, and other restrictive mediums, more people are able to
vote now than ever before.

II. Despite these inclusive modifications to voting laws and processes, there is still a major
gap in the percentage of those that are registered to vote and those that actually do vote.

A. According to the Census’s 2016 Population Characteristics on voting, “In
2016, among the estimated 18.9 million registered nonvoters in America, the most
common reason for not voting was dislike of the candidates or campaign issues
(4.7 million registered nonvoters), followed by not being interested in the election
(2.9 million), being too busy or having a conflicting schedule (2.7 million), and
having an illness or disability (2.2 million).”

1. In other words, the grand majority of nonvoters’ reasons could be linked
to the phenomenon known as voter apathy.

2. Additionally, the lack of easier voting methods despite the technological
era we are currently residing in.

B. One of the best ways to combat this would be electronic voting and counting
systems.

1. The National Democratic Institute dives deeper into this issue, stating,
“Even if the use of such technology is both technically
feasible and desirable, it needs to be sustainable in the
long run (someone say sustainable). There are a number of
contributing factors to the long-term sustainability of
implementing electronic voting and counting, including
financial aspects, project management and staffing
arrangements.”

2. For starters, project management and staffing arrangements.
a. Discussions about electronic voting reached a peak after the 2000

elections trouble with the “hanging chads” epidemic in Florida,
according to ProCon.org. Paper ballots are often regarded as
unreliable, given its history in Bush v. Gore. Since electronic
ballots would counter the hassle of human fallacy.

b. Additionally, with more reliance of the internet, there will be less
necessity for poll workers, who are either volunteers or employees
with very small pay. However, those that do stay would need to be
trained in providing adequate support for the new systems.

3. The Organization of Engineering and Technology dives into this topic,
highlighting some of the advantages to electronic voting.

a. They point out that this may help with voter apathy since it will
appeal to the younger generation of future voters. Additionally,
since voting is considered a habitual practice, if we start the
younger generation voting strongly, they are likely to carry on
doing so in future elections.

b. They summarize their opinions by saying, “Technology has the
potential to transform voting and make politics more accessible,
particularly to younger voters, thereby increasing turnout and
making the result more reflective of the overall population.”

4. In regard to cost, there will be an initial fee for this shift in our electoral
process, however with donor support, this cost is projected to be feasible.

5. On the flip side, Electronic-Vote.org, which outlines some of the
concerns over Electronic Voting, worries that this will not only eliminate
the personality of the democratic system, but may give terrorists the
golden opportunity for sabotaging the elections in a way to gain more
influence over our country.

C. As a future lawyer, I hope to use my knowledge of the law to ensure the
continuation of equal voting rights for all eligible citizens.

Conclusion:

Transition: It’s time to close the polls and recount the ballets.

A. Today I have encouraged a deeper analysis of our country’s foundations and laws.
B. I also addressed a sustainable solution to low voter turnout and political apathy.
C. Abraham Lincoln said in The Gettysburg Address, “That Government of the people, by

the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth,” however, this can only be
done if we keep our country running “by the people”.

Veterinary Medicine Major- Biology

Topic: Animal Testing

G.P.: To inform

S.P.: To inform the audience about the testing of animals and some sustainable initiatives to help
eliminate corporations from using this to excel in their business.
Design: Topical/ Effect/ Solution

Introduction:

Attention Getter: Raise your hand if you are an animal lover? Well, Angela Moxey from the
Humane Society states that the “…registration of a single pesticide requires more than 50
experiments and the use of as many as 12,000 animals.”

Connection to audience: Thousands of innocent lives are placed at risk to create one product.
We humans can all agree that we are the consumers of products that were created ruining the
lives of beautiful creatures. We all use some sort of product on our skin or household on a daily
basis, whether it’s our face wash or our makeup products, even our hair products.

Connect to Earth Charter/Major: Section1, number 1, letter a of the Earth Charter states,
“Recognize that all beings are interdependent, and every form of life has value regardless of its
worth to human beings.” As a student chasing the Veterinary Medical field, I recognize the value
in the quality of life and how it impacts our society.

Preview: Today, I will inform all of you about the experimentation on animals and the struggles
they face, as well as, some sustainable solutions to make the world a better place.

Transition: The room is ready for the first procedure. Let’s begin.

Body:
I. There are numerous types of animal testing, lets address two most common ones that

affect our society.
A. According to American Antivivisection Society one major type of testing is Eye

Irritancy Test.
1. In a (2013) article from The Humane Society titled “Rabbits: Blinded for

Beauty” states that the Draize test is used to measure irritation or corrosion
caused to the eye or skin.

Attention Getter: I’m going to ask you all, true or false: These procedures do not harm
the animals. Answer: FALSE!

a. Testing causes a tremendous amount of pain/ulceration of the eyes.

b. The results are unreliable for the reason that rabbits and humans have
different ocular anatomies.

c. Blindness and cracking of the skin is a result from the procedure.
Visual Aide: In this image you can see how laboratories restrain their animals to be able to get
proper results from the experiments. The plastic incubator holds the head in place to make it
easier for scientists to work.

2. Veterinarian Dr. Buyukmiha from the University of California states that a
rabbit’s reaction to an ocular substance may differ from that of a human.

a. Experimentation on eye irritancy will not provide accurate and safe
results.

b. In my Veterinary Assisting class, Professor Castillo taught us that
technological and virtual testing is more accurate.

Attention Strategy: Raise your hand and be honest. Would you personally use
virtual simulators to gather data?

c. I personally use virtual simulators when studying the anatomy of an
animal.

B. Another type of testing according to Cruelty- Free Testing is Acute toxicity testing.
Orrrrrr (LD50)

Attention Grabber: Someone say LD50
1. In a recent study done from the International Association Against Experiment

on Animals, LD means Lethal Dose and LD50 means a dose needed to kill 50%
of the animals used in the experiment.

a. For example, a procedure might go on for 14 days.
b. My agriculture teacher showed us the possible reactions animals can

show post a toxic overdose.
c. The Peta Foundation states that the LD50 tests give the animal being

tested convulsions, seizures, paralysis, or bleeding from the nose or
mouth.

i. I learned in my research that different animals react
distinctively with each type of. Test.

ii. This also contributes to the inaccuracy of the results and the
effect.

2. Animals are not given any form of pain relief during these experimental
procedures.

Transition: Lets grab our chemical products and move onto the second procedure.

II. What are the effects of Animal Testing and some sustainable initiatives to help
combat this issue.

A. The effects of Animal Testing can lead to various outcomes.
1. The NCBI or (National Center for Biotechnology Information) states

that the effects of laboratory testing results on humas varies.
Attention Strategy: Someone say anatomy!!
2. One major side effect is the difference between the anatomical and

genetic variations between species.

a. I remember when I first began to study the anatomies of
different animals and realized how different each species was.

b. Veterinarian Dr. Idalia Rodriguez during my internship
allowed me to use her medical books for reference when
helping her treat different species.

3. Another major effect is the environment in a laboratory and its impact
on experiments.
Attention Strategy: By a show of hands, how many of you are taking
either biology or chemistry right now.

a. I am taking Biology and Chemistry Labs at Miami
Dade College and the environment is cold and

b. These conditions affect an animal’s natural reaction to
an experimental procedure and therefore, giving
inaccurate results.

B. Katherine Groff, from the ‘New England Anti-Vivisection Society’ states
that the effect of animal research and testing disturbs the surrounding
environment.

1. Her research expressed that the disposal of animals being
testing, and chemicals being used have significantly impacted
the air we breathe.

2. This outcome is vital in recognizing the pollution and damage
that is being input into our daily lives.

Transition: Let’s prescribe some sustainable initiatives to avoid the use of innocent
lives?

C. The Department of Health states, there are sustainable protocols in place to
minimize and eliminate the use of any living creature and enhance biological
studies.

Attention Strategy: “Raise your hands if you have ever heard of the
Environmental Protection Agency…. well…”
1. Agencies like the EPA or (Environmental Protection Agency) have

stated that they will remove all studies involving animals no later than
2035.

a. I personally believe and follow this agency because
they provide accurate and reliable information.

b. Many laboratory companies such as LabCorp work
hand in hand with the EPA and must follow the
protocols being set in place in order to have a
successful business.

2. Another organization is Cruelty-Free International
a. This organization states that they go undercover to

reveal the secret about animal testing laboratories, they
expose their mysteries in hopes to end animal suffrage.

b. They have also had a number of campaigns such as,
airlines transporting monkeys or cruelty for the use of
cosmetics.

D. The RSPCA or Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states
that organizations like their own are finding new sustainable motives to avoid
from the use of innocent animals.

1. Their research gives the society options to engage in different ways of
consuming products without using the abuse of a living thing.

Attention Strategy: “Does anyone know the name to look for on products
that avoid the use of animal testing?”
The answer is ‘Cruelty-Free’

Visual Aide: To give you a visual on what to look for, here are just some of the logos indicating
that animals were not used to test the products. Innocent lives were not harmed and placed at
risk.

2. Instead of investing in products that use the testing of animals to
succeed in their business, use products labeled ‘cruelty free’, or invest
in more homemade items.

3. As a future Veterinarian I will educate my clients about the importance
and value animals hold in our daily lives.

Conclusion:

A. Today, I discussed Animal Testings’ prevalence in our society.
B. I increased your knowledge in particular about two types of animal testing: Eye

Irritancy and Acute toxicity testing; highlighted its effects and addressed some
sustainable solutions.

C. As Maura Cummings once said, “All creatures are deserving of a life free from fear
and pain.”
