The Arian Controversy

Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up
while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But
whoever loves God is known by God. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An
idol is nothing at all in the world,” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called
gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us
there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they

Nicea: Homoousios (“same essence/substance”) vs. Arians: Homoiousios (“similar
essence/substance”)

Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (381 CE):

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and
invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all
worlds (æons), Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with

heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; he was crucified
for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the third day he rose again, according to

And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father, who with the
