Lesson 6

Your task is to research solicited job announcements. You can look at these sites for job openings: 

www.monster.com

, 

www.careerbuilder.com

, 

www.indeed.com

, or 

www.hotjobs.com

.  In addition to browsing online job announcements, you may search newspapers, company websites, or trade journals to find potential jobs.  This can be a job in your dream career, a job for an internship, or a job that you are looking for right now. 

Remember to save, print, or screenshot the job announcement. You will use the same job ad for Project 1 (Lesson 7). 

Directions: 

1. Analyze the job announcement and find all the key skills that the ideal candidate will possess. List them at the beginning of your document. 

2. Reflect upon your marketable skills and explain why you would or would not be an ideal candidate for the position chosen.

. What experiences or classes will help you to gain the needed skills?

. How can you rebrand your experiences to fit their needs? 

. How do you know that you have the needed skill? Explain 2 skills with a brief (4 sentences max) specific an example. . ( 250 words)

Lesson 7

Your assignment is to find an open position you could apply for and create a fitting a cover letter and a resume. The assignment has three parts:

· find a job ad

· write a resume

· write a cover letter

Find a Job

Search online and find a position for which you could qualify. That way you can write your resume accurately and appropriately using your current education and experience. You can utilize websites specific to job postings (monster.com, indeed.com, etc.) or go straight to a company website and see what employment opportunities they have available. You MUST provide a copy of the job posting when you submit your resume and cover letter. This is how I determine if your resume and cover letter do a good job addressing a specific audience. You may use the same ad you used for Lesson 6.

Once you find a posting, research the company by visiting their website, social media pages, or other relevant sources (there’s more information on researching companies in the resources linked in the lesson).

Find out what kind of resume they want, if they need specific skills for this position, and any other helpful information. If possible, identify who will be reading the application materials. If that information is not available, you may address the letter to “Dear Hiring Manager.”

Write the resume

Write your resume first. Follow the guidelines in the introduction document, and make sure you adhere closely to the dos and don’ts of resume construction. Remember, templates available on Word may work for you and they may not. Word may offer the template, but that doesn’t make it good. Utilize your knowledge of the CRAP principles to make your final design decisions.

Write the cover letter

Write the cover letter after the resume. The cover letter must address the specific job posting you found. Follow the guidelines in the lesson folder (consider using the Sample template).

 
Remember you must submit 3 documents for this assignment, a copy of the Job Advertisement, your Resume, and your Cover Letter.
