The Evolution of Wooden to Steel Ships; The USS Dolphin

Prior to the industrial revolution that took place in the 19th century, the United States military particularly the navy largely used wooden ships for their routine practices. This essay will cover the background of the ship, their evolution, and their significance to military culture. Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: Missing WIIFM
STRUCTURE: This WIIFM sentence does not meet SEA 3PC. There is no clear Who, What, and Why identified within the sentence. For example “Senior enlisted leaders (who) should understand three part communications requirements (what) because it is the format used for their assignments (why); SEA Effective Writing Guide p. 12.

BACKGROUND Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: This mp is very choppy and does not flow. I’m having a hard time trying to follow your story line. Is this intent to say that during the industrial revolution there was an idea to convert wooden ships into steel. Or that this was the 1st ship in the line of new steel ships?

Prior to the industrial revolution that took place in the 19th century, the United States military particularly the navy largely used wooden ships for their routine practices. The USS Dolphin ships is unanimous with the initial attempts to manufacture using steel which was a key game-changer in the ship making industry and the United States navy (Podvia, 2018). The introduction of large-scale manufacturing of steel ships following the industrial revolution, mass production of steel ships transformed the entire navy practices and military strategies. Military professionalism is maintained through traditions which are basic guidelines for all personnel, therefore, it is critical for the military to comprehend the entire evolution of the ships (Holman, 2020). The industrial revolution initially transformed the ship making from wooden to iron and thereafter, steel-plate ships. This paper describes the background and subsequent development of steel-ships from the initial wooden ones. Additionally, the discussion entails the significance of the ship manufacturing evolution to the military, and lastly the career of the USS Dolphin that had a career spanning 38 years long. The currently existing ship development and manufacturing has it base on the industrial revolution that occurred between 1840 to 1950 where major developments linked to modern successes were derived. Knowledge of the back of wooden to steel ship mainly the USS Dolphin lays the foundation for their evolution. Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: Read this aloud. I’m not sure the intent. Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: Ship or ships? Were there multiple? Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: This is good information, but just randomly put in the middle. This is more suited to be the opening of this MP or MP3. Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: ? You already stated this? Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: ? Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: Read this aloud.

EVOLUTION Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: This MP does not support the evolution of Dolphin. You have information that is best suited for background.
I’m rather confused on the intent of your flow.
Is it to state that the legacy of steel ships started with Dolphin? If so, that is fine, but your MP2 needs to dive either into the evolution of all steels ships or how the ship itself evolved.
Call me so we can talk about this.

During the industrial revolution, major inventors and engineers transformed the navigation techniques or rather, power generation from wind and developed more research on steam engines. More advancements in the research and implementation of steam engine mechanics were also significant in the transformation of ship manufacturing (Berube, 2021). Technological advancements in the research of enhancing steam engine establishment were reviewed and implemented by the United States military. In 1968, the USS dolphin was launched by the United States military which was a testament of the advancement in the engineering of novel technological machinery. The USS dolphin was both electric and diesel submarine that was used for deep-diving development and research. The USS dolphin served for 38 years before decommission in 2007, setting a record for the longest serving operational traditionally powered submarine. The entire evolution or transformation of ship engineering from wooden to steel which led to the development of USS dolphin depicts its significance to the cultural practices in the navy and the entire military. USS dolphin was specifically special because its structural development allowed for easy manipulation both externally and internally, which allowed the military to conduct special high-level research and exploration activities (Edwards, 2019). Introduction of mass ship production following the industrial revolution was perhaps, the major step towards enabling the United States military to stamp their superiority over possible rivals or competitors that could have existed at the time. High-end naval warfare equipment and exploration techniques was one of the major sources of pride and a method to showcase one’s military capabilities. The evolution of wooden to steel ships in the military signify their importance to military culture.

IMPORTANCE Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: This MP does not meet the requirement. How does your topic IMPACT and is important to today’s operations? This is more historical information.

Ships are unanimous in all sub-units of the military and amongst their different ranks in their society. The importance of the ships in the navy can be traced back to the Quasi-war which involved the French revolution, former allies of the United States. In March 1794, the Congress narrowly voted to authorize the first Naval mission by the United States to stop the reported genocide of both men, women, and children. Prior to it decommission in 2007, the USS dolphin had been extensively useful to the military and the navy especially for the purposes of research and development.

The USS Dolphin was the only functional diesel-electric submarine that was reliable for deep-dive research and development in the navy’s operations. The submarine currently grounded in San Diego maritime base is the only vessel that can carry particular heavy loads of up to 12 tons, which is a significantly greater amount than any other available vessel. The internal structure of the USS Dolphin supports comprehensive onboard laboratory facilities more than any other submarine in the united state’s navy. The USS Dolphin is also culturally important with the records that are treasured by the military, including, the deepest operational depth. In 1969, the USS Dolphin launched a torpedo from the deepest point that has ever been launched before.

This essay covered the background of the military naval ships, their subsequent evolution, and their significance importance to military culture. Senior enlisted leaders should know the history behind the evolution from wooden to steel ships, because they are the care takers of military history and tradition. Comment by AmyShirelle Santos: Missing closing statement.
STRUCTURE: Closing should consist of one or two statements – of either a thought-provoking idea or a quote from someone of importance of expertise that supports the information outlined; SEA Effective Writing Guide p. 13.

The Value is in the Eye of the Beholder

A coin of zero monetary value was worth the life of a man. Senior enlisted leaders should

know the history behind military challenge coins, because they are the caretakers of military

history and tradition. This essay will cover the background of the coin, their evolution, and their

importance to military culture.

Background

There are no official records detailing the history of military challenge coins, but as

Emily Baumgaertner (2018) indicated in her article in The New York Times, there is one

common tale that most people consider true. That narrative states that during World War I

(WWI), a wealthy lieutenant presented his flying unit with solid bronze medallions that he paid

to have struck with the squadron’s insignia. At the time, there was no meaning or value to these

medallions other than a kind gesture from a wealthy lieutenant. One of those medallions given to

a young pilot ended up in a leather pouch, which he wore around his neck from that point

forward. After sustaining damage to his aircraft, the young pilot lands behind enemy lines

leading to immediate capture and detention by German forces. To deter escape, the German

captors stripped the young pilot of all his possessions, with the exception of the leather pouch

(Baumgaertner, 2018).

The tale goes on to claim that one night during an attack on the Germans, the young pilot

escaped and eluded the Germans by acquiring and wearing civilian clothing. He succeeded in

making it to an allied French outpost, but found himself facing execution because the French

thought him to be a saboteur. To the pilot’s misfortune, that particular outpost had been victim to

frequent attempts by saboteurs dressed as civilians hoping to harm the French. Due to lack of

proper identification to show allegiance, the French went into execution mode as a means of self-

defense (Baumgaertner, 2018). Remembering that he had the stamped medallion bearing the

insignia of his squadron, he presented it as proof of his allegiance and as luck would have it, one

of the Frenchmen recognized the insignia granting him more time to confirm his identity

resulting in the cancellation of his execution. This event led to the tradition of every member in

that squadron carrying their medallion, which was now dubbed a coin, at all times (Challenge

Coin History and Rules of the Coin, n.d.). Knowledge of the background of the challenge coins

lays the foundation for their evolution.

Evolution

The coin that saved the young pilot in WWI was a piece of scrap bronze with a stamp on

it. Military historian Kevin Santiago (2019) notes that today’s coins are far more elaborate and

intricate and have evolved into more than just a stamped piece of metal. He attributes the change

to the advances in manufacturing techniques that have also evolved over the years (Santiago,

2019). They are not just round like a typical coin or the medallion that the young WWI pilot

handed out; some are in the shape of ships, aircraft, people, and even characters from cartoons

and movies. Modern manufacturing techniques enable the ability to display 3-dimensional

images similar to the detail found on actual currency. “Virtually every element of a custom coin

now can be tailored to suit individual preferences” (Santiago, 2019, Challenge Coins Today

Section, para. 2). The evolution of military challenge coins from pieces of scrap metal to

intricate pieces signify their importance to military culture.

Importance

Challenge coins are popular across all branches of the military amongst all their

communities and ranks (Santiago, 2019). In the U.S. Navy, unit commanders can use

appropriated funds to purchase command coins that they present or award at their discretion as

per Naval Administrative Message 184/14 (Howard, 2014). These coins are given or awarded for

any action deemed worthy by the bearer of the coins. Some examples include exceptional

performance, specific achievement, and outstanding physical fitness scores. It is a small item

generally presented within a handshake, but since the recipient does not expect it and due to the

personal nature of the coin, it is a very generous and personal gesture. According to the Chief

Petty Officers Guide, using one’s reward power is a proven way to show recognition of hard

work and a motivator to those not performing at their full potential (Kingsbury, 2018).

These coins also serve to promote unity and esprit de corps. According to Tracy English,

a historian at the Air Force’s 37th Training Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas,

these coins have always been about morale and commitment (Baumgaertner, 2018). From their

beginning, these coins have served as proof of the bearer’s allegiance. Sometimes they are

exchanged or traded with members of different groups or presented to other groups as a sign of

appreciation, or maybe to mark an occasion. Coins from different Chief Messes are on display in

almost any Mess across the Navy, but still communicate pride and comradery. The relevancy of

challenge coins in today’s military is evident on a daily basis in large part due to the history of

the coins (Santiago, 2019).

This essay covered the background of military challenge coins, their evolution, and their

importance to military culture. Senior enlisted leaders should know the history behind military

challenge coins, because they are the caretakers of military history and tradition. A stamped

piece of non-precious metal became the most valuable thing to a man facing death; allowing it to

lose its worth now would be tragic.
