Literature Review Step I
As you complete the courses in your program of study, you will be reading numerous research articles and other scholarly documents. As you read, your role will be to critically analyze the articles. To prepare for your work in this module, consider what it means to be a critical analyst rather than a reader/consumer of research. Reading an article informs you. Being a critical analyst transforms how you view, read, and respond to research, and builds the skills you need as a professional scholar who contributes to positive change. As you move through your program, be cognizant to select quality scholarly documents and literature from reliable sources. Visit the Specialization Resources List in the Toolkit to see reputable resources for your field of study.
For this Discussion, you will practice the skill of identifying and summarizing information from scholarly resources. To prepare for this Discussion, identify a minimum of four articles related to the case study. These articles should be in addition to those noted in the Further Reading List for the case study. If you have not already done so, download the Research Article Organizer from the Toolkit to your computer. This tool will guide you in identifying key elements of research articles as well as key information.
Apply the tool to each of the four articles you found in order to identify key elements and key information in each article.
Assignment Instructions:
Write a 2- to 3-paragraph reflective evaluation of your experience with the tool. Evaluate the extent to which tool benefited you in organizing and summarizing information. Include what modifications you made (or could make) to the tool to make it more useful to you. Explain why these modifications are beneficial.
Use Attachments to conduct this assignment citate APA style and include references from the 4 articles related to the case study.
Research Article Organizer
Article Title | Author(s) | Topic | Problem | Purpose | Theory | Research Design | Research Method | Research Questions | Analysis Method | Findings | Notes about article |
The Perceptions of K-12 Administrators’ Self-efficacy on the Usage of Skype as an Online Communication Software Tool | Kiriakidis, P. | Online Communication Tools | Need for online communication systems to support administrators | Examine whether or not a software program such as Skype can assist school administrators in professional development in providing support to administrators | Self-determination Theory (SDT) | Qualitative | Open-ended interviews that were transcibed; Member checking | Case analyses conducted for each participant | All participants reported that they gain a more positive self-efficacy via interactive skype and insightful online communication experiecnces provided via Skype.
Implementing a “Circle of Friends” Peer-Mediated Intervention for High School Students with Autism | Schlieder, M. | “Circle of Friends” (CoF) Autism Intervention for Older Students | The problem is the need for effective social skills training for children with ASD | The purpose of this study was to understand individuals’ interpretations of the CoF phenomenon | The conceptual framework that guided the study was constructivism, which postulates that learners construct knowledge based on a combination of previous experiences and social interactions | A collective case study was used to investigate experiences of parents, teachers, and community agency leaders participating in this project. | 1. What are the experiences of group facilitators, parents, and nonprofit community agency directors in three area high schools implementing “Circle of Friends” (CoF) PMI? 2. How do the contributions of the community organization providing professional development, funding, and ongoing support influence CoF implementation in three area high schools | Inductive analysis to code for themes: Hand analysis involved coding information from sources, the interviews, and partnering agency documents. In order to do a cross-case analysis, a comparison table was created organizing information generated from parent, facilitator, and partnering agency. | Four main themes emerged from a cross-case analysis of the data. The research uncovered the influence a CoF partnership initiative has on inclusion, social skills improvement, empowerment, and sense of wellbeing. In addition to benefits, participants shared challenges and recommendations for future CoF implementation. Several unexpected findings also came to light. |
The purpose of this template is: |
1. Provide you with an organized way to take notes on the articles you collect. This enables the article notes to be substantive and usable in the future. You will find that you will want to keep track of all articles that you use throughout your program. |
2. The components included in this template align with those found in research articles. This template helps you stay focused on those components while reading. You will find that you are very comfortable with these components when it comes time to write scholarly work yourself. |
This is one example of an organizer that can be used. You may find any number of methods that may best suit your organizational style. The important thing is to create and use an organized system. |
Issues in K-12 Education Case Study
Scenario
Your state is considering a required set of education standards that all schools
must adopt. You have been nominated to serve on the statewide committee to
inform the legislature as to which standards, if any, should be adopted. You will
have the opportunity to take a stand on the following issue. Does a set of
required standards improve or limit education for ALL students (e.g., general
education students, special education, English language learners, gifted
learners) in state schools?
Consider the following questions: How can standards be implemented to improve
the quality of education for ALL students in all levels and types of classroom
(e.g., general education, special education, vocational)? Is it more effective to
adopt district standards, state-specific standards, or national standards?
Once you decide which standards to adopt, what materials, supports and training
will be needed to implement them? How do different stakeholders (e.g., policy
makers, government leaders, principals, teachers with various specialties and
points of view, students, parents) feel about the issue of standards adoption and
implementation?
Stakeholders
The State Department of Education, school administrators, teachers, students,
parents, educational specialists, politicians, business leaders, employers,
advocacy groups, and the community at large.
Document Set 1
• Document 1: A brief overview of the standards-based movement with
information synthesized from multiple authentic sources
• Document 2: Statistics and quantitative data that demonstrates inequality
and falling international performance; the data focuses on literacy,
science, and math scores, as well as the importance of education on
lifetime earnings
This document is pieced together from a variety of authentic documents
• Document 3: An authentic document that explores the function of
technology in education, and non-traditional settings for K-12 education
© 2014 Laureate Education, Inc. Page 1 of 2
• Document 4: An authentic document that introduces new guidelines for
education reform that will prepare all public school students for college or
a career
Document Set 2
• Document 5: A simulated editorial from a school administrator detailing
concerns and issues with implementation of the Common Core State
Standards
• Document 6: A simulated magazine article that illustrates some the issues
regarding a set of uniform standards and expectations for English
Language Learners
• Document 7: A simulated blog post with relevant comments about the
concern that a common set of standards might exclude such disciplines as
art and music
• Document 8: Simulated blog posts about the Common Core State
Standards and special education
NOTES: Common Core is arguably one of the most pressing and controversial
issues in K-12 education. The goal of this case study is to have students
consider the various stakeholders involved, and take a position on both the broad
issue of standards-based education and one or more subtopics that fall under
this umbrella.

If you could give doctoral candidates one tip, what may it be?
The Walden Specialization directors were asked to give you some advice as you start
your journey. The following is their counsel for you.
• Get involved in the professional associations within your field and subscribe to a
few of the top journals to stay abreast of current news and research in the field.
• The “D” in the degree is for Determination. No matter what happens, keep
moving forward! Every step moves you closer to the degree.
• Keep your eye on the diploma—do whatever is necessary to get from here to
there.

• I have 2 search strings running on Google Scholar for about 4 years now:
• what is an evaluative case study
• what is a qualitative Specialization evaluation
These have been goldmines for probably hundreds of articles that I have read
— and I saved many.
• Focus on time management.
• You need to understand that the pursuit of a doctoral degree requires
dedicated time and discipline.
• Get involved. Begin to develop your professional identity with your chosen
field from the very start of your Specialization. Join at least one professional
organization and become active in your state and/or local chapter. Find
opportunities for service in your chosen field. Attend conferences. Read
journals. Start to think about how you can contribute to the field and how you
can grow as a scholar practitioner. These activities will add richness, depth,
and context to your studies and will help you decide whether the field is right
for you.
• We are preparing you for positions that don’t exist today. Technology is
changing the way people learn and do business. Be prepared to be
challenged in your thinking!
• A major part of the doctoral Specialization is the dissertation or doctoral
study. As early as possible (maybe the second quarter) start reading recent
dissertations or doctoral studies on topics of interest. Pay attention to the
organization, writing style, and content. One a quarter, or every other quarter,
will do. The Walden librarian can help locate appropriate documents. Doing
this will help to demystify the process and reduce anxiety.
• Start reading about your area of interest right from the beginning of your
Specialization. If you don’t have an area of interest, you need to explore
immediately what local problems you might want to address.
• Decide on a dissertation topic you are passionate about.
• Be excited and invest in your research.
• Join the International Reading Association and try to attend a conference.
• Watch for conferences of the American Education Research Association.
• Stay current with topics in literacy education.
• Focus on one aspect of literacy that is your passion and then learn about the
“movers and shakers” in that area.
• Do not be wed to every word that you write.
• Whatever your interest area, read, read, read, and read some more on the
topic/area of interest.
• “Get ready to think outside the box … and be willing to throw the box away.”
