You will expand the outline you wrote in Module 3 into a complete paper. Papers must be typed in 12-point type and be double-spaced. There is no set length for the paper, though the average length is four or five pages. Citations are not necessary. Other important aspects are thoroughness, clarity, and a demonstrated sensitivity to the work of art.

Your paper should have the following elements:

Introduction

  • Include specific information about the work within the first few paragraphs of your essay analysis: title, artist, date, location, dimensions, medium of the work, and the name of the exhibition/museum in which the work is displayed.
  • Introduce the reader to the work of art by writing a detailed description of it. Your writing should be so detailed that the reader can picture the artwork.
  • End the introductory paragraph with your thesis statement.

Body

  • Discuss the Elements of Art and Principles of Design that you think are important in understanding and analyzing this work. This part of the paper should be very detailed and will take several paragraphs. Go through each Element and Principle and describe in as much detail as possible how it is utilized in the work of art. Also worth noting is any apparent lack of a particular Element or Principle. For example, if a piece is in black and white, you should also address the impact of the lack of the Element of color.
  • Discuss the medium the artist used and how the artist exploited the particular qualities of this medium. Always refer to the artist by her or his last name, not the first name, and put the title of the work in italics.
  • Explain your personal response to the work based on its form as you analyzed it in the previous sections.

Conclusion

Wrap up the essay by summarizing your thesis. Do not simply repeat your thesis statement; instead, reiterate the thesis while finalizing your thoughts on the entire topic.

Keep in mind:

  • Writing a formal analysis does involve your interpretation of and personal response to the work, but your reactions must be supported by referring to specific elements and qualities which you see in the work.
  • Accept the work as it is. Do not “second guess” the artist and make such statements as, “I think the painting would have been better if the artist had . . .”
  • Titles of exhibitions are in quotation marks; titles of works of art are underlined or are in italics.

Common mistakes you will want to avoid:

  • Failure to proofread your paper to check for spelling, punctuation, subject/verb agreement, incomplete sentences, run-on sentences, etc. Don’t rely on your computer’s spellchecker; the computer may not know if you mean “there” or “their.”
  • Confusing “it’s” and “its.” “It’s” means “it is.” “Its” is the possessive of “it,” for example, “The car is red, and its wheels are green.”
  • Referring to the artist by her/his first name. Would you write English literature paper on Romeo and Juliette and refer to the author as
  • Do not use personal pronouns in academic writing. Personal pronouns include I, we, you, our, and my. Every sentence can be reworded to avoid personal pronouns.

For example, instead of saying “I feel Waterlillies, by Claude Monet is a beautiful painting,” you should just say “Monet’s painting, Waterlillies, is beautiful because…”
Instead of saying, “When you first look at Ballerina by Edgar Degas, you will notice many details,” you should say, “Degas’ painting, Ballerina, contains many interesting details, such as…”

Building design

A design is a plan for the construction of something to implement the activity in the form of a prototype. Examples of design activities are architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, business processes, and sewing patterns. The design is made to satisfy specific goals. It must use functional, economic, and socio-political considerations, and it should interact with a specific environment. This piece of paper will discuss building design which is one of the engineering diagrams.

Building designs are done by people known as building designers. To be a building designer, he or she must be a graduate from a school of architecture and possess a license from the licensing bodies. Building designs are drafted for various reasons. Some of the reasons include helping in the estimation of materials if designed well, it minimizes energy consumed, creates unique works, and many more. When making a building, one must consider things like the purpose for the building, the environment where the building is to e constructed, and the people’s culture where the building is to be constructed.

During the sketching of my building design, I considered the following principles.

I considered balance which will help in giving stability and structure to the design. I tried to balance visual weight by balancing colors, space, and texture. I tried to employ unity in the sketch. This created agreement between elements such that each element is observable as more critical than the sketch as a whole. It has also promoted proximity by connecting the elements visually and not only by placing them together: I have also employed repletion which has strengthened my design by putting elements together hence creating association and consistency.

In my sketch, there is also rhythm created by the use of elements more than one time. This has created a feeling of organized movement. Variety is also important in creating rhythm. I have also employed the principle of movement, which created visual flow. I have placed dark and light areas. I have directed movement by using edges, shapes, and colors. This helps in making building design attractive to people. I have also employed the principle of emphasis. This has been gained by contrasting sections of color, size, form, shape, and density. This helps in capturing attention on the design. I have also employed space by stationing elements in a way that space is observable within them.

I also designed the building to receive maximum daylighting. The building will be able to receive maximum daylight. This is important because it reduces pressure which in turn saves energy. To achieve this, I have employed narrow floor plates, atrium spaces, and internal courtyards to ensure that the house receives maximum daylight. I have also tried to design a durable design to maximize on future resilience of the building. My design also took into account the conservation input energy. Any building is supposed to be designed in a way that it can be built effectively by manual labor and doesn’t require many machines. This makes the building expense-friendly.

In conclusion, a building design should minimize energy use. This helps in increasing energy dependence in the future. It should utilize the building space and material used. A good design should operate in a way that allows people to use and reuse materials most productively. A good design should also reduce the amount of waste that would be released from the building. A design should give sustainable building. A building design should maximize on allowing as much daylight in the building as much as possible. By making daylight to be the primary source of light, it saves the energy used in the building.

Sketch of a building.

It is designed to be a residential house.

It is also designed to allow daylight inside, making it the primary source of light.

The design is designed to save on inputs making it expense-friendly.
