Types of Health Insurance
The types of health insurance and the details associated with each can be complex, even more so with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the associated healthcare marketplace. The terminology alone can result in a significant barrier to care. Then, when costs, eligibility, referrals, and restrictions are factored in, access to care can be severely impacted by uncertainty and confusion. Health professionals need to be aware of these different types, how they impact patient care, and how they impact the healthcare economy overall so that information can be communicated to patients in a clear, effective way. In this Competency Assessment, you will compare the various types of health insurance and consider the overall state of the health insurance system in the United States. The document can be used as a quick reference guide for comparing health insurance plans.
