3. Topic: The first article studied how many individuals who committed suicide sought professional help up to a year before their death. It also researched individuals who attempted suicide while under professional mental health treatment (Bommersbach et al., 2018).The second article is about research conducted in military suicide prevention programs. It noted that at least 53% of military soldiers who committed suicide did so without ever seeking treatment. The study also linked military suicides more to untreated mental disorders verses direct relation to combat related missions (Harmon et al., 2016).
4. Sampling Method: The first article conducted a blind medical chart review of people who reported and committed suicide through the Rochesters Epidemiology Program (REP) from 2000 to 2009. The REP is a collection of people who have consented to releasing their medical information for research purposes. The medical records included a patient health questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) which identifies people who are at risk for suicide (Bommersbach et al., 2018).The second article didn’t directly question participants. However, it reviewed electronic health records of military members who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder. It also screened members connected to the Caring Letters Program which sends caring letters to military members after they’ve been released from a psychiatric institution (Harmon et al., 2016).
5. Sampling Procedure: The first article used the REP electronic data system and medical records to extract questionnaire responses at each suicide patient’s health care visit up to year prior to their death. The collection noted the patient’s score on the PHQ-9, whether the patient or the provider noted SI, and whether the patient had a preexisting mental health condition (Bommersbach et al., 2018).The second article, initially searched 17,100 articles and books through a database for detailed suicide criteria. The search eventually narrowed down to 5 publications that discussed specific suicide prevention programs within the U.S. military. Although this study did not specifically ask questions directly to the participants, it did utilize a correlational research procedure by reviewing cause and effect of overall outcomes of military suicide prevention programs (Harmon et al., 2016).
6. Made You Think: One drawback noted in the first article was that although there was quantitative data showing a pattern in how healthcare systems use the health questionnaires, it lacked qualitative details regarding the treatment provided at each visit. I would suggest that this study somehow include research on whether treatment options were offered and rejected by the patient. However, one oversight noticed in this article, was that 77% of individuals who committed suicide, saw their primary care provided within a year of their death but were not screened for suicidal risk factors (Bommersbach et al., 2018).The issue I have with the second study is how they categorized stress from combat related experiences as if it could not manifest into a mental health condition. They specifically related military suicide deaths to untreated mental conditions and substance abuse. I would suggest the study further defines the relationship between combat stress and mental health conditions to hopefully clarify some oversight with their findings (Harmon et al., 2016).

Topic:
The first article, Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) focuses on health risk factors among youth and extending through adulthood. The YRBS monitors 6 categories that contribute to health risks behaviors from intentional and unintentional injuries, alcohol and drug use, tobacco use, STDs and pregnancy, unhealthy dietary behaviors and physical activity. The data collected dates back to 1990 as this was a school-based survey that consisted of 75 forced-choice items that was administered in classrooms of high school students. The YRBS results help to understand the factors in which contribute to certain illnesses, disability among youth and young adults, and even death.
The second article focused on the nationwide epidemic of obesity in regards to declining levels of physical activity among the youth. The Georgia Youth Fitness Assessment was created to evaluate health -related activity in fifth and seventh-grade students. Out of the 93 schools there was an 86% response rate and 77% participated (5248 students). 52% of students did not meet the standard for healthy aerobic fitness; 23% did not meet the standard for muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility; 30% were outside the recommended range for BMI. 22% percent did not achieve 60 minutes of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, which is the daily recommendation. All subgroups (e.g., boys/girls, urban/rural) scored poorly. Therefore, a substantial amount of Georgia’s fifth- and seventh-grade students exhibit unhealthy levels of physical fitness.
Sampling method…
For the YRBS article, the data provided on the Youht97 CD-ROM allowed users to select a “Survey Results” icon that provided them the opportunity to view questionnaire items in six behavioral risk areas: injuries, tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors; dietary behaviors; and physical activity.
The Georgia Youth Fitness Assessment included a statewide probability sample of fifth- and seventh-grade students. The sample was designed to enable grade-specific comparisons by gender, race/ethnicity, and urban/rural status among students
Sampling procedure…
Youth97 is a CR-ROM device, which allows users to access and manipulate several years of summary data that can assist in decision-making tools for policy, risk reduction programs and school health personnel.YRBS data is used to measure progress toward achieving 21 national health objectives and one of the 8 National Education Goals.
The Second article’s measurements included aerobic capacity; body composition; and muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. Physical activity during the most recent 3 days was assessed. The survey was conducted in 2006; the data were analyzed in 2007–2008.
Made you think…
For the first study, I like the idea that there is a system in which could be manipulated to locate specific data regarding the study. What I also like about this study is that it is an ongoing study that focuses on several things that our youth struggle with. The survey was over a twelve month period and I think they did a good job in summarizing the results of the study.
For the second study, I think I would have made the sample a bit broader. The researchers only assessed fifth and seventh grader students as the methods targeted specifics like gender, race and ethnicity, and urban/rural areas. The researcher also only assessed physical activity for the 3 most recent days, which I thought, was odd because the this study specifically pertains to the obesity.
